Overview of Gene Research
Cbs, short for cystathionine β -synthase, encodes an enzyme involved in the transsulfuration pathway, which is crucial for the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids. This pathway is essential for the synthesis of cysteine and the production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gaseous signaling molecule with various physiological functions [1,2,3].
Elevated endogenous estrogens stimulate human uterine artery endothelial cell (hUAEC) H2S production by selectively upregulating the expression of Cbs. The human Cbs promoter contains multiple estrogen-responsive elements, and estradiol-17β (E2β) stimulates Cbs transcription via ERα/ERβ-directed gene transcription [3].
In conclusion, Cbs is vital in the transsulfuration pathway for sulfur-containing amino acid metabolism and H2S production. The discovery of estrogen-regulated Cbs expression in hUAECs provides insights into the role of Cbs in vascular-related physiological processes. Understanding Cbs may offer new perspectives on estrogen-related vascular functions and potential therapeutic targets in related diseases.
