Overview of Gene Research
Cpe, or Carboxypeptidase E, is a gene with significant implications in cancer research. It has been shown to be involved in promoting tumourigenesis. In cancer, Cpe may act through the activation of the Erk/Wnt pathways, leading to epithelial-mesenchymal transition, which in turn promotes cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis [1].
In gastric cancer, elevated Cpe expression is associated with poor survival and recurrence prognosis, and it is found in cases with a later clinical stage. Cpe is considered an independent prognostic factor [1].
In hepatocellular carcinoma, exosomes released from cancer cells contain Cpe mRNA and protein, and Cpe is identified as an exosomal bioactive molecule driving the growth and invasion of low-metastatic HCC cells. Cpe-shRNA-loaded exosomes can inhibit malignant tumour cell proliferation via Cyclin D1 and c-MYC suppression [2].
In conclusion, Cpe plays a crucial role in promoting tumourigenesis in various cancers, especially in gastric and liver cancers. The study of Cpe in these cancer models helps to understand the mechanisms of cancer progression, providing potential targets for cancer treatment.
