Overview of Gene Research
Htr2c, the serotonin 2C receptor, is a class G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR). It is enriched in the hypothalamus and brain stem, regulating energy homeostasis, such as feeding and glucose metabolism. It has also been associated with neural activity regulation in the context of mood disorders [1,2].
Using mouse genetic models where Htr2c can be selectively deleted or restored, it was found that Htr2c in forebrain Sim1 neurons promotes food intake, counteracting the anorectic effect of serotonergic appetite suppressants. Activation of Htr2c in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH) inhibits PVH neurons through a Gαi/o -dependent mechanism [3].
In conclusion, Htr2c plays a crucial role in metabolic regulation, especially in feeding behavior. The gene knockout and restoration models in mice have provided insights into its function in the context of appetite regulation, which may contribute to understanding and treating metabolic disorders related to abnormal feeding [1,3].
