Overview of Gene Research
Emc8, a component of the endoplasmic reticulum membrane protein complex (EMC), is crucial for the insertion of diverse transmembrane proteins into the plasma membrane. Each EMC consists of Emc1-7, Emc10, and either Emc8 or Emc9. EMC plays a key role in the biogenesis of multi-pass transmembrane proteins, with implications for various biological processes [2,3].
In a study on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), it was found that fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) led to an increase in the methylation level of the Emc8 promoter region in responders, suggesting a potential link between Emc8 methylation and the therapeutic mechanism of FMT in SLE [1]. In Drosophila, the loss of EMC components including Emc8/9 affects the biosynthesis of rhodopsin and other multi-pass membrane proteins, leading to retinal degeneration, highlighting its importance in maintaining the stability of multi-pass transmembrane proteins [3].
In conclusion, Emc8 is essential for the biogenesis of multi-pass transmembrane proteins. Studies in Drosophila and on SLE patients' methylation changes after FMT have revealed its significance in maintaining normal biological functions and its potential involvement in autoimmune diseases, providing insights into the underlying mechanisms of these biological processes and diseases.
