Overview of Gene Research
Pdgfa, short for Platelet-derived growth factor subunit A, is a key member of the PDGF family. It plays crucial roles in various biological processes such as cell growth, angiogenesis, and tissue repair. It exerts its functions mainly through binding to its receptor PDGFRA, and is involved in multiple signaling pathways like the AKT pathway, which is associated with cell survival and proliferation [1,3].
In glioblastoma, while PDGFRA has long been considered as the receptor for PDGFA, new research shows that PDGFA can also activate EPHA2 independently of PDGFRA and AKT activation. Co-upregulation of PDGFRA and EPHA2 leads to worse patient prognosis and poorer therapeutic effects. Inhibiting both PDGFRA and EPHA2 shows synergetic inhibitory effects on glioma cells [1].
In esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, high expression of PDGFA is positively correlated with T stage and is an independent predictor for poor prognosis [4].
In biliary atresia, the G allele of rs9690350 in PDGFA is significantly associated with an increased risk of the disease [2].
In conclusion, Pdgfa is involved in multiple disease-related biological processes. Its study through gene-related models has provided insights into diseases such as glioblastoma, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and biliary atresia. Understanding the functions of Pdgfa can potentially contribute to the development of new therapeutic strategies for these diseases.
