Overview of Gene Research
Tnfaip6, also known as TNFα-stimulated gene-6, is associated with inflammatory responses [7,8,9]. It may be involved in various biological processes. For example, in mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs), it can serve as a cell marker, and TNFAIP6+ MSCs show enhanced immune-suppression activities [2].
In disease-related research, TNFAIP6 has been studied in multiple conditions. In diabetic foot ulcers, a unique population of fibroblasts overexpressing TNFAIP6 is enriched in patients with healing wounds [1]. In cancer, high TNFAIP6 expression is associated with poor prognosis in gastric cancer, urothelial carcinomas, and low-grade glioma. Knockdown of TNFAIP6 inhibits the proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of gastric cancer cells in vitro [3,4,5,6]. In inflammatory bowel disease, serum TNFAIP6 may be a biomarker for disease activity [7]. In a mouse model of colitis, Tnfaip6 secreted by bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells alleviates colitis by modulating the balance of follicular helper T cells and follicular regulatory T cells [8]. Conditional knockout of Tnfaip6 in inner ear hair cells shows no significant impact on auditory function [9].
In conclusion, Tnfaip6 plays diverse roles in inflammation-related biological processes and disease conditions. Studies using gene knockout or conditional knockout mouse models have revealed its functions in areas such as wound healing, cancer progression, and inflammatory bowel disease, providing insights into potential therapeutic targets and disease biomarkers.
