Overview of Gene Research
Pcbp1, also known as poly(rC) binding protein 1, is an RNA and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) binding protein. It is involved in multiple essential biological functions such as regulating alternative splicing, transcription, and translation. It also participates in various pathways like the WNT signaling pathway and is associated with maintaining cellular iron absorption, mitochondrial function, and mRNA acetylation [2-4, 7-8].
In mouse models, cardiomyocyte-specific deletion of Pcbp1 led to defects in heart development, similar to human congenital cardiac defects. Loss of Pcbp1 caused aberrant alternative splicing and premature termination of Aars2 in cardiomyocytes [1]. In a breast tumorigenesis xenograft orthotopic model (4T1-Pcbp1-/ -), knockdown of Pcbp1-induced tumorigenesis was inhibited by activating the WNT signaling pathway, suggesting Pcbp1's role in breast cancer development [2].
In conclusion, Pcbp1 is a crucial regulator in multiple biological processes. Through gene-knockout and conditional-knockout mouse models, its roles in congenital cardiomyopathy and breast cancer have been revealed. These findings provide important insights into the molecular mechanisms of these diseases and suggest Pcbp1 as a potential therapeutic target in related disease areas.
