Overview of Gene Research
Slc2a12, also known as GLUT12, is a member of the SLC2 gene family and functions as a glucose transporter. It is involved in pathways related to glucose metabolism, iron homeostasis, and tissue repair [1]. In vertebrates, it has shown to potentially provide functional compensation for the loss of SLC2A4 in birds, and its functionality is associated with basal metabolic rates in endotherms [3].
In hyperuricemia model mice, knockout of Glut12 (encoded by SLC2A12) using the CRISPR-Cas9 system revealed that GLUT12 acts as a physiological urate transporter, and its dysfunction elevates blood urate concentration [4]. In ovarian cancer cells, hypoxia-induced upregulation of SLC2A12 promotes cancer cell growth and metastasis by suppressing ferroptosis. Silencing SLC2A12 in animal models significantly inhibits tumor growth and metastasis [2].
In conclusion, Slc2a12 plays essential roles in glucose and urate transport, as well as in the regulation of cancer cell behavior. Gene-knockout models in mice and in vivo studies in animal models have been crucial in revealing its function in hyperuricemia and ovarian cancer, providing insights into potential disease mechanisms and therapeutic targets.
