Overview of Gene Research
LYRM4, also known as ISD11, encodes a 11 kDa iron-sulfur cluster protein. It is crucial for maintaining the stability and activity of the human cysteine desulfurase complex NFS1-LYRM4-ACP. LYRM4 is involved in iron-sulphur cluster (ISC) biosynthesis, which is related to pathways like oxidative phosphorylation, the citric acid cycle, iron homeostasis, heme biosynthesis and DNA repair [1,2].
In hepatocellular carcinoma (LIHC), LYRM4 mRNA and protein levels are upregulated. High LYRM4 expression is related to various clinical stratifications, prognosis, and survival of LIHC patients. It is also associated with the infiltrating levels of six immune cell types, indicating its potential as a prognostic biomarker and molecular target for LIHC therapy [1]. In addition, mutations in LYRM4 can cause combined OXPHOS deficiency, affecting multiple respiratory chain complexes and other Fe-S proteins in patients [2].
In conclusion, LYRM4 is essential for ISC biosynthesis and has a significant impact on multiple biological pathways. Its role in diseases like hepatocellular carcinoma and mitochondrial disorders, as revealed through functional studies, highlights its importance in understanding disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets.
