Overview of Gene Research
Scgb3a1, also known as UGRP2, is a member of the secretoglobin gene super family. Secretoglobins are cytokine-like small molecular weight secreted proteins. Scgb3a1 may possess unique biological functions, potentially related to immunoregulatory functions as it is expressed in airway epithelium, and has been associated with antibacterial response, humoral immune response, and response to external stimuli [1,3,4]. It may also have tumor suppressor function [5].
In a study using Scgb3a1-null mice as negative controls, the lack of Scgb3a1 did not affect the expression of other Scgb genes or the development of pulmonary neuroepithelial bodies during embryogenesis [1]. In smoking-related lung cancer, the down-regulation of Scgb3a1 was observed, and high expression of it was associated with favorable prognosis [3]. In nasal polyposis, certain alleles of Scgb3a1 might have a protective effect [2].
In conclusion, Scgb3a1 has diverse biological functions, especially in airway-related immunoregulation and potentially in cancer prognosis. The use of Scgb3a1-null mouse models has provided insights into its non-redundant role in embryonic development and its implications in diseases such as lung cancer and nasal polyposis.
