Overview of Gene Research
Apol6, also known as Apolipoprotein L6, is involved in multiple biological functions. In adipose tissue, it associates with lipid droplets and plays a role in lipid metabolism by affecting lipolysis. It can form a complex with Perilipin 1 (Plin1) and HSL on lipid droplets, and its C-terminal directly interacts with N-terminal Plin1 to inhibit lipolysis [1].
In cancer-related research, it has been associated with immunotherapy efficacy in bladder cancer, where it interacts with acyl-coenzyme A synthetase long-chain family member 4 (ACSL4) to mediate immunotherapy efficacy through ferroptosis [2].
In a mouse model, ApoL6 ablation decreases white adipose tissue mass, protecting mice from diet-induced obesity, while its overexpression in adipose brings obesity and insulin resistance [1]. This shows that ApoL6 has a significant impact on adipose-related metabolic diseases.
In addition, in the context of radiotherapy for rectal cancer, Apol6 was screened as one of the five key genes related to radiosensitivity and prognosis, although its expression did not differ between rectal cancer tissues and adjacent non-cancerous tissues [3].
In conclusion, Apol6 is a gene with diverse functions. Its role in adipose tissue lipid metabolism and cancer-related processes such as immunotherapy and radiotherapy prognosis is significant. Mouse models, especially those with ApoL6 ablation or overexpression, have provided valuable insights into its functions in obesity-related metabolic diseases and cancer-related conditions.
