B230219D22Rik, which corresponds to C5orf24 in humans, encodes feimin. It is a key modulator of glucose homeostasis, as feimin is secreted from skeletal muscle during feeding, binds to MERTK, promoting glucose uptake and inhibiting glucose production via AKT activation. It is also expressed in microglial cells, potentially influencing stroke-related biological processes [1,2].
In glucose homeostasis, administration of feimin and insulin synergistically improves blood glucose levels in normal and diabetic mice. A specific SNP in MERTK reduces its association with feimin, leading to elevated post-prandial glucose and insulin levels in humans.
In stroke research, B230219D22Rik/C5orf24 expression was reduced in mouse and human cell stroke models.
