Overview of Gene Research
NDST4, a member of the glucosaminyl N-deacetylase/N-sulfotransferase (NDST) family, is involved in the initiation of heparan sulfate sulfation [4]. It may play a role in maintaining colonic epithelial homeostasis, and is potentially associated with resistin level regulation [2,3].

A study on Ndst4 knockout mice showed that although the mice were viable and fertile, they had an increased number of goblet cells and a decreased number of colonocytes in the proximal colon, along with an increased basal level of apoptosis in the colonic epithelium, indicating Ndst4's involvement in colonic epithelium development and homeostasis [2]. In colorectal cancer, NDST4 is considered a novel candidate tumor suppressor gene. Its genetic loss is significantly associated with advanced pathological stage and poorer overall survival, suggesting its role in CRC progression [1].

In summary, NDST4 is crucial for colonic epithelial homeostasis and has potential implications in colorectal cancer. The Ndst4 knockout mouse model has been valuable in revealing its role in these biological processes and disease conditions, enhancing our understanding of the underlying mechanisms.
