Overview of Gene Research
Fmo1, flavin containing dimethylaniline monooxygenase 1, is involved in lipid metabolism [2]. It is also one of the genes defining major fibroblast populations in human skin [1]. In plants like Arabidopsis thaliana, its homolog is a regulator in plant resistance and systemic acquired acclimation [4].
In a cellular non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) model, knockdown of Fmo1 suppressed lipid accumulation, reversed the down-regulation of PPARα expression, and reduced ferroptosis upregulation induced by free fatty acids. In contrast, Fmo1 overexpression dysregulated lipid metabolism and downregulated PPARα levels. PPARα overexpression mitigated the Fmo1-overexpression-induced upregulation of ferroptosis and lipid accumulation [2]. High Fmo1 expression in classical papillary thyroid cancer independently predicted favorable recurrence-free survival [3].
In conclusion, Fmo1 plays a significant role in lipid metabolism, as demonstrated by in vitro NAFLD models, and has prognostic value in classical papillary thyroid cancer. Understanding Fmo1 function through such models can provide insights into related disease mechanisms and potential treatment strategies.
