Overview of Gene Research
Car7, also known as carbonic anhydrase VII, is a gene encoding an enzyme belonging to the alpha-carbonic anhydrase family. These enzymes are involved in the catalysis of the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide, which is crucial for many physiological processes such as pH regulation, ion transport, and fluid balance [1,3]. In the body, Car7 is expressed in various tissues including the brain, kidneys, and digestive system, suggesting its involvement in multiple biological functions [1,2,4].
In a study using a Car7 knockout (KO) mouse model, it was found that mature hippocampal pyramidal neurons express Car7. P13-14 Car7 KO mice showed behavioral manifestations atypical of experimental febrile seizures (eFS) and a complete absence of electrographic seizures. This indicates that Car7 is a key molecule in age-dependent neuronal pH regulation, and its absence affects the generation of eFS. The study also found that Car7 mRNA is expressed in the human cerebral cortex before the age when febrile seizures occur in children [3].
In conclusion, Car7 plays an essential role in physiological processes, especially in neuronal pH regulation which is related to the occurrence of febrile seizures. The Car7 KO mouse model has significantly contributed to understanding the role of Car7 in this specific disease-related area, providing insights into the underlying mechanisms of febrile seizures at the genetic level.
