Overview of Gene Research
Nup58, a nucleus-pore protein, is a component of the nuclear pore complex (NPC) [2]. NPCs act as channels between the cytoplasm and nucleus of mammalian cells, mediating the trafficking of proteins and RNA, and Nup58 is involved in multiple biological processes [1,2,5]. It also participates in mitosis, stress response in plants, and may be related to the metastasis of lung adenocarcinoma through the GSK-3β/Snail signaling pathway [1,2,3].
Depletion of Nup58 in mammalian cells leads to centrosomal abnormalities and delayed abscission during mitosis, highlighting its important role in this process [1]. In lung adenocarcinoma, knockdown of NUP58 using a lentiviral vector-mediated shRNA inhibits metastasis and invasion of cell lines in vivo and in vitro, and also affects the expression of EMT markers and related signaling pathways [2]. In maize, overexpression of ZmNUP58 promotes chlorophyll content and antioxidant enzyme activities under drought-and salt-stressed conditions, and it can regulate genes related to phytohormone synthesis, osmotic adjustment, etc. [3]. In Drosophila, loss of Nup54 and Nup58 results in compromised piRNA biogenesis from the flamenco locus, showing their role in transposon silencing via the piRNA pathway [4].
In summary, Nup58 is crucial for mitosis, stress response in plants, and the metastasis of lung adenocarcinoma. Functional studies through gene knockout-like experiments in different organisms have revealed its diverse roles in biological processes and disease-related conditions, providing insights into the underlying mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets for related diseases.
