Overview of Gene Research
Hbb-y, the murine homolog of human γ -globin, is involved in the production of hemoglobin during embryonic development. Hemoglobin is crucial for oxygen transport in the body. The genes within the beta -globin complex, where Hbb-y is located, play significant roles in the ontogeny of mice, and studying Hbb-y can offer insights into normal and abnormal hematopoiesis [1,2,3].
In Gfi1b -deficient TER119+ fetal liver cells, the expression of Hbb-y was upregulated during the gestation period from day 12.5-17.5 p.c., and this increased expression was maintained in adult Gfi1b -deficient mice. This indicates that Gfi1b is a regulator of Hbb-y expression and is important for embryonic and adult erythroid maturation [4]. Also, treatment with androgen receptor antagonists like flutamide, linuron, and p,p'-DDE in rat fetal testes reduced the expression of Hbb-y, suggesting potential hormonal regulation of this gene [5].
In conclusion, Hbb-y is essential for embryonic hemoglobin production. Studies using gene-modified mouse models, such as the Gfi1b-deficient mice, have revealed its role in erythroid cell maturation. The impact of androgen receptor antagonists on Hbb-y expression implies its involvement in hormonal-related biological processes. Understanding Hbb-y can contribute to research in hematological disorders and potentially provide insights into hormonal-associated developmental abnormalities.
