Overview of Gene Research
Pfn2, a profilin, binds to globular (G -)actin and regulates actin filament formation, playing a significant role in the actin cytoskeleton, which is crucial for cell shape, division, and intracellular force generation. It is also involved in multiple biological processes and associated with various signaling pathways [1].
In triple negative breast cancer, Pfn2 promotes cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition [2]. In androgen receptor-negative prostate cancer, knockdown of Pfn2 inhibits tumor growth in vivo [3]. In esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, downregulation of Pfn2 inhibits cell invasion and migration and induces an epithelial-mesenchymal transition phenotype [4]. High Pfn2 expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma independently predicts poor overall survival [5].
In conclusion, Pfn2 is an important regulator in actin-related biological processes. Its dysregulation is associated with the development and prognosis of multiple cancers. The use of gene knockout or knockdown models in these studies has revealed its role in promoting tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis, suggesting Pfn2 as a potential therapeutic target for these cancer types.
