Overview of Gene Research
Surf2, part of the Surfeit locus genes, is involved in multiple biological processes. It has a bidirectional promoter with Surf-1, and they are divergently transcribed [3,4]. In the nucleolar stress response, Surf2 buffers free 5S ribonucleoprotein (RNP) particles, modulating their activity. Its depletion increases cellular sensitivity to nucleolar stress, while overexpression promotes resistance. Also, Surf2 is overexpressed in many cancers and is an independent prognostic marker for adrenocortical cancer [1].
In the context of Alzheimer's disease (AD), through the integration of genomics and transcriptomics, it was found that an increase in Surf2 expression was associated with a significantly decreased risk of AD [2].
In summary, Surf2 is crucial in processes like the nucleolar stress response and may have a protective role in AD. Studies on Surf2, especially through gene-related models, contribute to understanding its functions in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, potentially offering new therapeutic targets and insights into disease mechanisms.
