Overview of Gene Research
Vsig8, also known as V-Set and Immunoglobulin domain containing 8, may play roles in multiple biological processes. It has been associated with pathways related to T-cell function as it is a putative receptor of VISTA (V-region immunoglobulin-containing suppressor of T cell activation), a B7 family member, and the VSIG-8/VISTA coinhibitory pathway may impact T-cell function [5]. Additionally, it has been implicated in hair follicle keratinisation and hair shaft differentiation in cashmere goats [4], and is expressed in the hair follicle, nail unit, and oral cavity in mice [3].
In a study on acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), Vsig8 was one of four genes validated to show differential expression in the blood of ARDS patients compared to controls, and also had dynamic expression in mouse lung tissues. The addition of Vsig8 along with other genes and immune cell proportions improved the prediction performance of ARDS development [1]. In a syngeneic mouse model of medulloblastoma, the identification of Vsig8 as the binding partner of VISTA on tumor cells, and its correlation with increased VISTA expression in human transcriptomic analyses, suggests it could be a potential therapeutic target [2].
In conclusion, Vsig8 appears to be involved in T-cell regulation and may be a relevant factor in diseases like ARDS and medulloblastoma. The findings from mouse models, such as those in ARDS and medulloblastoma studies, contribute to understanding its role in these disease conditions, highlighting its potential as a biomarker or therapeutic target in related diseases.
