Overview of Gene Research
Mettl24, also known as Methyltransferase like 24, is a member of the methyltransferase-like family. Although its exact essential function is yet to be fully elucidated, it potentially participates in immune-relevant biological processes such as cytokine binding, NF-kappa B binding, MHC protein complex, and interleukin-12 action [1].
In kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC), Mettl24 expression in tumor tissues is significantly decreased compared to normal adjacent kidney tissues, which is associated with a lower survival rate of KIRC patients. It is linked to a number of immune checkpoints, cytokines, chemokines, and chemokine receptors, and also correlated with the infiltration levels of 10 types of immune cells in KIRC. Additionally, CTCF and EP300 were discovered to be the probable transcription factors of Mettl24 in KIRC [1]. In rectal cancer, genes of highly correlated lncRNA-mRNA pairs including Mettl24 presented strong prognosis effects [2]. Also, in children with early rhinovirus-induced wheezing developing atopic asthma, DNA methylation changes were detected in the introns of DDO/METTL24 genes [3].
In conclusion, Mettl24 seems to be involved in immune-related biological processes and is associated with diseases like KIRC and rectal cancer. Its expression levels and associated methylation changes may play crucial roles in these disease conditions. The findings related to Mettl24 contribute to understanding the biological mechanisms underlying these diseases and potentially offer new prognostic and therapeutic targets.
