Overview of Gene Research
Synpo2l, or synaptopodin 2-like protein, is localized in the sarcomere of cardiomyocytes and is involved in heart morphogenesis. It plays a role in the structural development and function of cardiac myocytes. It cooperates with α-actinin during actin bundle formation to facilitate sarcomere formation and maintenance, and is potentially involved in pathways related to cardiac development [3].
Genome-wide association studies have linked Synpo2l to several diseases. Loss-of-function variants in the SYNPO2L gene are associated with atrial fibrillation, suggesting it may be involved in the pathogenesis of atrial cardiomyopathy [2]. In colorectal cancer, it has been identified as a core gene regulated by m6A. METTL16 can regulate the stability of SYNPO2L mRNA, which in turn promotes the secretion of COL10A1, the infiltration of tumor-associated fibroblasts, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in tumor cells, leading to distant metastasis [1].
In conclusion, Synpo2l is crucial for the proper formation and function of the cardiac sarcomere. Its association with atrial fibrillation and colorectal cancer metastasis, as revealed through genetic studies, highlights its importance in understanding the pathogenesis of these diseases. These findings contribute to the potential development of new therapeutic strategies targeting Synpo2l-related pathways in heart and cancer diseases.
