Overview of Gene Research
Ccl11, also known as eotaxin-1, is a member of the eotaxin family. It functions as a chemotactic agent for eosinophils and participates in innate immunity. It may also be involved in pathways related to chemotaxis, cell adhesion, modulation of neuroendocrine functions, and neuroinflammation [1].
In various disease conditions, Ccl11 has been implicated. In asthma, it is crucial in eosinophil chemoattraction and activation, with its levels in sputum and blood correlating with asthma severity and control, and negatively with lung function [2]. In ovarian cancer, targeting Ccl11 and its receptors may be a new treatment avenue [3]. In the context of COVID-19, elevated Ccl11 levels are seen in patients, and it may be involved in post-COVID-19 neurologic complications [1]. In rheumatoid arthritis, Ccl11 is involved in cell migration through self-amplification via CCR3 [4]. Also, in alcohol dependence, plasma Ccl11 levels are higher in patients and decline during detoxification, being correlated with disease severity and clinical symptoms [5].
In conclusion, Ccl11 plays essential roles in multiple biological processes and disease conditions, such as immunity, inflammation-related diseases (asthma, rheumatoid arthritis), neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disorders (possible role in COVID-19 neurologic complications, alcohol dependence), and cancer (ovarian cancer). Understanding its functions through various research models helps in developing potential therapeutic strategies for these diseases.
