Overview of Gene Research
Tmc3, a member of the transmembrane channel-like (TMC) gene family, encodes a protein predicted to have 6-10 transmembrane domains and a conserved TMC domain [4]. Tmc3 may function as a mechanosensitive ion channel, as it is the most highly expressed channel in human cardiac fibroblasts among TMC family members [1]. It has also been associated with blood pressure regulation, as single predicted loss-of-function (pLoF) variants in Tmc3 were found to be associated with blood pressure in a study analyzing the UK Biobank whole-exome sequencing dataset [5].
In a study on extraganglionic vagal mechanoreceptors, Tmc3 was identified as a marker of potential gastrointestinal mechanoreceptors among extraganglionic neurons in the mouse vagus nerve [3]. In the context of renal clear cell carcinoma (RCCC), Tmc3 was significantly related to the overall survival of RCCC patients and was positively correlated with the degree of immune infiltration [2].
In conclusion, Tmc3 appears to have diverse functions. It may be involved in mechanosensation in cardiac fibroblasts and the vagus nerve, and it also plays a role in blood pressure regulation and the prognosis and immune infiltration of RCCC. The findings from studies on Tmc3 contribute to our understanding of its functions in normal physiological processes and disease conditions.
