Overview of Gene Research
Nrgn, also known as neurogranin, is a small brain protein expressed in various telencephalic areas. It plays an essential role in synaptic plasticity by regulating the availability of calmodulin (CaM) [4].
In glioma, NRGN has been identified as a tumor suppressor. LINC00641 can positively regulate NRGN by absorbing miR-4262, and overexpression of NRGN prevents cell proliferation and enhances apoptosis [1].
In mild traumatic brain injury patients, serum NRGN levels were significantly higher in those with structural lesions compared to those without, suggesting its potential as a diagnostic biomarker [2].
Also, in schizophrenia, a single-nucleotide polymorphism (rs12807809) in the NRGN gene was associated with abnormal Papez circuit function, specifically in the functional connectivity between the hippocampus and certain brain regions [3].
In addition, NRGN polymorphisms are associated with schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder in the Han Chinese population [5].
In conclusion, Nrgn is crucial for synaptic plasticity. Its role in various diseases such as glioma, mild traumatic brain injury, and mental disorders has been revealed through different research models. These findings contribute to understanding the pathogenesis of these diseases and may provide new targets for diagnosis and treatment.
