Overview of Gene Research
Ptdss2, also known as Phosphatidylserine synthase 2, is an enzyme involved in the synthesis of phosphatidylserine (PS), an essential anionic phospholipid of cell membranes [3,5]. In mammalian cells, Ptdss2 in the mitochondria-associated membrane (MAM) in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) performs de novo synthesis of PS through a base-exchange reaction specifically converting phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) to PS [5]. This process is crucial for maintaining the structural and functional integrity of cell membranes and is part of the glycerophospholipid metabolic pathway [6].
Research has shown its significance in multiple disease-related aspects. In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), Ptdss2 is one of the genes used to construct a Metabolism-Related Risk Score (MRRS) model, which has high accuracy in predicting the prognosis of HCC patients [1]. Also, in a zinc-homeostasis related risk model for HCC, Ptdss2 was screened out as one of the signature genes, with patients having higher risk scores related to worse outcomes and immune suppression [2]. In breast cancer, high expression of PTDSS2 in conjunction with low expression of ATP11B is associated with poor prognosis and enhanced metastasis, as it leads to increased non-apoptotic phosphatidylserine on the outer leaflet of the cell membrane, promoting metastasis through immunosuppression [4].
In conclusion, Ptdss2 plays a vital role in phosphatidylserine synthesis and is associated with various diseases, especially cancers like hepatocellular carcinoma and breast cancer. Studies related to Ptdss2 help to understand the mechanisms of disease development, potentially providing new directions for disease treatment and prevention.
