Overview of Gene Research
Popdc3, encoding a membrane protein, is a transmembrane protein with a unique cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) binding site. It is widely expressed in mammalian tissues, with high levels in skeletal muscle. POPDC3 is involved in cAMP signaling and plays a key role in many physiological and pathological processes. Its study using genetic models like gene knockout can help reveal its functions [1,2].
Research has identified homozygous POPDC3 missense variants in patients with a new form of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD). Knockdown of popdc3 in zebrafish led to larvae with tail curling and dystrophic muscle features, indicating its importance for skeletal muscle function [2]. In addition, POPDC3 may serve as a potential biomarker. High POPDC3 expression correlated with poor prognosis in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients, while reduced Popdc3 expression was associated with high risk and poor survival in gastric cancer patients [3,4].
In conclusion, Popdc3 is crucial for skeletal muscle function and is associated with LGMD. Its abnormal expression is related to the prognosis of certain cancers. Studies using model organisms like zebrafish have been valuable in understanding its role in biological processes and disease conditions.
