Overview of Gene Research
Prkcg, also known as protein kinase C gamma (PKCγ), is a gene encoding a protein kinase that plays crucial roles in various cellular processes. Protein kinases are involved in signal transduction pathways, phosphorylating target proteins to regulate their function. PKCγ has been implicated in pathways related to cell survival, apoptosis, and inflammation, which are essential for normal physiological functions and can impact disease development [2,5].
Prkcg has been associated with several diseases. In acute mountain sickness (AMS), the expression of Prkcg was significantly higher in the moderate-to-severe AMS group compared to the no or mild AMS group, suggesting it may be a key gene influencing AMS severity and could serve as a diagnostic or predictive indicator [1]. In sepsis, the lncRNA IL-17RA-1 was found to attenuate LPS-induced sepsis via the miR-7847-3p/Prkcg-mediated MAPK signaling pathway, indicating its role in sepsis-related processes [2]. Variants in Prkcg are also linked to spinocerebellar ataxia type 14 (SCA14), where different variants in the gene led to varying clinical symptoms and disease severities, with decreased solubility of the PKCγ protein potentially playing a role in the pathogenesis of SCA14 [3]. Additionally, SNPs in Prkcg were associated with osteosarcoma susceptibility and metastasis in Chinese Han population [4].
In conclusion, Prkcg is a vital gene involved in multiple cellular processes and is associated with diseases such as AMS, sepsis, SCA14, and osteosarcoma. Understanding the function of Prkcg through genetic studies helps elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying these diseases, providing potential targets for diagnosis, prediction, and treatment.
