Overview of Gene Research
TIMM17B, a gene encoding a protein involved in mitochondrial protein import, is crucial for the proper functioning of mitochondria. It is one of the paralogs in the human genome related to the yeast Tim17, and is part of the TIM23 protein translocase complex, which facilitates the transport of mitochondrial precursor proteins to the mitochondrial matrix and inner membrane [3,4]. Mitochondrial protein import pathways are essential for mitochondrial function and overall cellular homeostasis.
In breast cancer, TIMM17B shows significantly increased expression compared to paracancer tissues, and can serve as a diagnostic index and a potential immunotherapy target. Its high expression is associated with better prognosis in basal breast cancer patients. Also, TIMM17B expression is negatively correlated with immune infiltration, Tcm cells, T helper cells, and immune targets, and is significantly related to drug resistance and ferroptosis-related key enzymes expression [1].
In heart failure patients with ischemic and dilated cardiomyopathy, TIMM17B is downregulated, indicating a potential role in mitochondrial quality control, which is crucial for maintaining normal mitochondrial function [2]. In degenerative ascending aortic aneurysm, downregulation of TIMM17B was detected, suggesting its possible involvement in mitochondrial dysfunction-related aortic diseases [5].
In summary, TIMM17B plays an important role in mitochondrial-related functions. Its abnormal expression is associated with diseases such as breast cancer, heart failure, and degenerative ascending aortic aneurysm. Understanding TIMM17B through studies in these disease contexts helps to clarify its biological functions and may provide insights into disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic strategies.
