Overview of Gene Research
Slc7a8, encoding the L-type amino acid transporter 2 (LAT2), is a crucial gene involved in amino acid transport. It is part of the solute carrier family 7 and is essential for the uptake of specific amino acids like arginine and large amino acids. This gene plays a role in multiple biological processes, such as maintaining tissue homeostasis, immune cell function, and metabolism [2].

In a diet-induced obesity mouse model, Slc7a8 knockout (KO) mice had significantly less weight gain, reduced glucose intolerance, decreased adipocyte mass and hypertrophy, along with less lipid accumulation in multiple organs compared to wild-type mice on a high-fat diet. This indicates that targeting Slc7a8 can protect against diet-induced obesity [1]. In ILC2s, genetic ablation of Slc7a8 reduced the frequency of these cells, suppressed cytokine production, and impaired type 2 immune responses, highlighting its importance in the metabolic programs of ILC2s [2].

In conclusion, Slc7a8 is key for amino acid-related biological functions. KO mouse models have revealed its role in obesity prevention and immune cell function. Understanding Slc7a8 can potentially offer new strategies for treating obesity-related comorbidities and diseases associated with type 2 immune response dysregulation.
