Overview of Gene Research
Eif3l, the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3, subunit L, is one of the subunits of the eIF3 complex. It plays a crucial role in the translation of mRNAs encoding growth-promoting proteins, enhancing translation rates and thus controlling cell proliferation. It may also be involved in the Flavivirus replication through interaction with the viral non-structural 5 protein [2,4].
In human prostate LNCaP cells, androgen treatment significantly increases the palmitoylation level of eIF3L. The regulation of its palmitoylation may offer new directions for prostate cancer therapy, and the increased level of androgen-induced eIF3L could potentially be used as a biomarker for early-stage prostate cancer diagnosis [1].
In Caenorhabditis elegans, loss-of-function mutations in the eif-3.L gene result in a 40% extension in lifespan and enhanced resistance to endoplasmic reticulum stress, suggesting a pivotal role for eIF3L in the regulation of cellular and organismal responses to stress and aging [3].
In conclusion, Eif3L is essential in regulating cell proliferation and translation. Studies using genetic models like Caenorhabditis elegans have revealed its role in lifespan extension and stress resistance. In the context of prostate cancer, it shows promise as a therapeutic target and diagnostic biomarker.
