Overview of Gene Research
SYBU, also known as syntabulin, is a synaptic protein that may play important roles in neurodegenerative diseases and endometrial receptivity [2,3]. In neurodegenerative diseases, synaptic proteins including SYBU are closely related to cognitive decline and can be used as potential predictive and discriminative biomarkers [2]. In the endometrium of women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), SYBU shows significantly elevated expression, and its function may be related to pathways like tyrosine metabolism, PI3K-Akt pathway, etc [3].
In a multi-ancestry genome-wide association meta-analysis of Parkinson's disease, SYBU was identified as one of the potentially novel loci, suggesting its possible involvement in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease [1]. Moreover, novel variants of SYBU were detected in the prodromal stage of Parkinson's disease patients, indicating its potential as a genetic biomarker for early diagnosis [4]. In addition, in the comparison of biological behavior of lacrimal gland adenoid cystic carcinoma cells, SYBU was among the genes with higher expression in high-grade transformation cells, which may be related to their higher malignant degree [5]. Also, in thymic epithelial tumors, LINC00174 favors the expression of SYBU by sponging miR-145-5p, and LINC00174 impacts cell migration and lipid metabolism [6].
In summary, SYBU is a significant protein involved in multiple biological processes and disease conditions. Its association with neurodegenerative diseases, especially Parkinson's disease, as well as its role in PCOS-related endometrial receptivity and cancer cell behaviors, reveals its importance in understanding disease mechanisms. The findings from various studies contribute to exploring SYBU's potential as a biomarker and therapeutic target in these diseases.
