Overview of Gene Research
Calb1, also known as calbindin 1, is a calcium-binding protein. It plays a crucial role in regulating calcium-ion homeostasis, which is involved in various cellular processes such as autophagy, cell proliferation, and senescence. It may participate in pathways like the Ca2+-dependent calcineurin/NFAT pathway [4].
In chicken, CALB1 isolated from intestinal mucus significantly inhibits the replication of avian viruses, possibly by binding calcium ions and/or inducing autophagy [1].
In ovarian cancer, CALB1 acts as an oncogene by enhancing the interaction between p53 and MDM2, promoting cell proliferation and inhibiting senescence [2].
In aging mouse oocytes, knockdown of CALB1 leads to reduced calcium ion levels in the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, resulting in mitochondrial dysfunction and meiotic defects, indicating its importance in maintaining oocyte quality [3].
In conclusion, Calb1 is essential for regulating calcium-ion-related cellular functions. Its study through model-based research, especially in diseases like ovarian cancer and in processes like oocyte aging, has provided insights into its role in disease development and reproductive health.
