Overview of Gene Research
Fabp12, a member of the fatty acid-binding protein (FABP) family, has the same structure as other FABP genes and resides in a cluster with FABP4/5/8/9 within a 300,000 bp chromosomal region [2]. It is involved in reversibly binding intracellular hydrophobic ligands and trafficking them throughout cellular compartments, and is thought to play a role in lipid-related processes [4].
In prostate cancer, FABP12 is preferentially amplified and/or overexpressed in metastatic tumors compared to primary ones. It concurrently triggers metastatic phenotypes like epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), leading to increased cell motility and invasion, and lipid bioenergetics such as increased fatty acid uptake, accumulation, and ATP production from fatty acid β-oxidation [1]. Additionally, the FABP12-Slug-Survivin pathway has been found to drive docetaxel resistance in prostate cancer cells, with high levels of Survivin associated with poor prognosis in PCa patients, and FABP12 status determining its prognostic significance [3].
In summary, Fabp12 plays crucial roles in lipid-related processes and is significantly involved in prostate cancer metastasis and chemoresistance. The findings from prostate cancer-related studies help to understand the role of Fabp12 in these disease conditions, potentially providing new avenues for targeted treatment strategies in prostate cancer [1,3].
