Overview of Gene Research
Il19, an interleukin cytokine, is a member of the IL-10 family [1]. It plays diverse roles in maintaining tissue epithelial layer integrity and homeostasis, as well as in host defense mechanisms during infections [1]. The cytokine is involved in multiple pathways, such as those related to DNA damage-induced cytokine production [3].
In lung cancer, osteoclasts secrete Il19 which binds to Il-20RB on tumor cells, activating the JAK1/STAT3 signaling pathway and promoting bone metastasis [2]. In atopic dermatitis, a novel Il19+IGFL1+ keratinocyte subpopulation is increased in lesions, which may disrupt the skin barrier and mediate pruritus [4]. In chronic rhinosinusitis, Il19 is among the factors differentiating disease endotypes [6]. Polymorphisms in the Il19 gene are associated with immunological non-response in HIV-infected patients on cART [7]. Also, in systemic lupus erythematosus, the Il19 SNP rs2243188 is related to the disease pathogenesis [5].
In conclusion, Il19 has essential functions in maintaining tissue homeostasis and is involved in various disease processes including cancer metastasis, skin inflammation, sinusitis endotyping, and immunological response in HIV-infected patients, as well as in systemic lupus erythematosus. The study of Il19 using genetic models, like gene polymorphisms in these diseases, helps to understand its role in disease mechanisms, providing potential insights for treatment strategies.
