Overview of Gene Research
Adgrb1, also known as BAI1, belongs to the adhesion G protein-coupled receptor family. It plays important roles in multiple biological processes such as suppressing angiogenesis, mediating phagocytosis, and regulating dendritic spine and excitatory synapse development. It is also involved in signaling pathways related to Rac and Rho, and is crucial for brain development and synaptic function [1,2,3]. Genetic models like knockout (KO) mice are valuable for studying Adgrb1's functions.
In Adgrb1 -/- mice, significant social behavior deficits, increased seizure susceptibility, delayed growth, and reduced brain weight were observed. There was also reduced neuron density and increased apoptosis during brain development in the hippocampus, indicating the essential role of Adgrb1 in normal brain development and function [2]. Additionally, a schizophrenia-associated genetic variant near Adgrb1 may regulate its expression, suggesting Adgrb1's potential involvement in schizophrenia-related pathways [4,5].
In conclusion, Adgrb1 is essential for normal brain development and synaptic function, and its dysregulation may be associated with neurological disorders such as schizophrenia and abnormal social behavior and seizure susceptibility as revealed by KO mouse models. The study of Adgrb1 provides insights into the underlying mechanisms of these diseases and potential therapeutic targets.
