Overview of Gene Research
Ppp1r17, Protein Phosphatase 1 Regulatory Subunit 17, is involved in multiple biological processes. It is associated with the regulation of synaptic function within neurons, and its phosphorylation and nuclear-cytoplasmic translocation, regulated by cGMP-dependent protein kinase G (PKG; Prkg1), can affect gene expression [1]. It may also be involved in neural progenitor cell cycle progression as it slows down this process [3].
In mice, DMHPpp1r17 neurons (neurons in the dorsomedial hypothalamus marked by Ppp1r17 expression) regulate aging and lifespan. Their regulation occurs through hypothalamic-adipose inter-tissue communication, where they control physical activity and white adipose tissue (WAT) function, including the secretion of extracellular nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (eNAMPT) via sympathetic nervous stimulation [1]. Additionally, in ob/ob mice, PPP1R17-expressing neurons in the DMH are activated by increased food intake and in turn restrict intake to limit overconsumption [2].
In conclusion, Ppp1r17 is crucial in the regulation of physiological processes such as aging, lifespan, and food intake. Studies in mouse models have revealed its role in hypothalamic-adipose communication and the control of food intake, which are important in understanding mammalian aging and energy homeostasis.
