Overview of Gene Research
Drgx, also known as Dorsal Root Ganglia Homeobox, is a paired-like homeodomain transcription factor. It is crucial for the development of nociceptive primary sensory neurons in the early postnatal period. It may be involved in the regulation of genes related to pain perception, such as matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and prostaglandin E receptor 2, and thus has importance in the context of neuropathic pain development [1].
In rats, post-developmental nerve injury leads to DRGX downregulation in small and medium primary sensory neurons, contributing to neuropathic pain. Transduction of short hairpin RNA to downregulate DRGX induces mechanical allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia, while its overexpression suppresses neuropathic pain. MMP-9 inhibitor can attenuate the pain induced by DRGX downregulation [1].
In summary, Drgx plays an essential role in the development of nociceptive primary sensory neurons. Studies, especially those using down-regulation models in rats, have revealed its significance in neuropathic pain, suggesting that it could be a potential target for treating neuropathic pain conditions.
