Overview of Gene Research
Embigin (EMB) is a transmembrane glycoprotein. In glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), its high expression is associated with poor prognosis. EMB promotes GBM progression by upregulating epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and glycolysis, and maintaining glutathione (GSH) redox balance via inducing monocarboxylate transporter 4 (MCT4) and glutathione peroxidase 3 (GPX3) expression [1].
In maize, EMB-7L is essential for embryogenesis and plant development. It encodes a chloroplast-localized P-type pentatricopeptide repeat (PPR) protein. Mutations in EMB-7L lead to severe chloroplast deficiency, affecting chloroplast protein-encoding gene transcription, pre-mRNA intron splicing, chloroplast structure and activity [2].
In conclusion, EMB plays diverse and crucial roles in different organisms. In GBM, it serves as an independent prognostic biomarker and a potential therapeutic target. In maize, it is vital for embryogenesis and plant development through its influence on chloroplast-related processes. These findings from different research models contribute to our understanding of biological functions and disease mechanisms related to EMB.
