Overview of Gene Research
Gabra4, encoding the α4 -subunit of GABAA receptors (GABAARs), is involved in synaptic transmission within the GABAergic system. The GABAergic system plays a crucial role in regulating neuronal excitability, and thus Gabra4 is important for normal neural function [2]. Genetic models, such as knockout mice, are valuable tools for studying Gabra4's functions.
In Gabra4 knockout mice, autistic-like behavior, enhanced spatial memory, and attenuated susceptibility to pentylenetetrazol-induced seizures were observed, resembling human high-functioning autism. Hippocampal transcriptome profiling and interactome network construction revealed an up-regulation of the NMDAR system at the center of converged pathways underlying these phenotypes [1].
In conclusion, Gabra4 is essential for normal neural function through its role in the GABAergic synaptic transmission. The study of Gabra4 knockout mice has provided insights into its role in autism-like phenotypes and epilepsy, suggesting that Gabra4 may be a key factor in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying these neurodevelopmental disorders.
