Overview of Gene Research
Il5ra, the interleukin 5 receptor, alpha, is a well-established regulator of eosinophil activation. It is involved in eosinophil-mediated anti-parasitic activities and allergic reactions. IL5RA also participates in pathways such as the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway [1]. It has been shown to be associated with multiple biological processes and diseases, highlighting its overall biological importance. Genetic models can be valuable in further understanding its function.
IL5RA was upregulated in myeloma and progressed smoldering myeloma, and was associated with pathways like PI3K-Akt signaling and natural killer cell mediated cytotoxicity [1]. In pulmonary fibrosis, epithelial IL5RA was upregulated during disease progression and promoted epithelial-mesenchymal transition via the Jak2/STAT3 cascade [2]. In multiple myeloma, the risk variant rs34562254-A at TNFRSF13B led to elevated levels of IL5RA in plasma, increasing MM risk [4]. IL5RA gene variants were significantly associated with susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with rs13097407 reducing susceptibility and rs3856850 increasing it [3].
In conclusion, Il5ra is crucial in eosinophil-related functions and is associated with various diseases including myeloma, pulmonary fibrosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Studies, including those potentially using gene knockout models (implied by the functional studies), have revealed its role in disease-related processes such as cell proliferation, apoptosis, and susceptibility, providing insights into disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets.
