Overview of Gene Research
Smim26 is a microprotein encoded by the lncRNA LINC00493. It localizes in mitochondria and exerts anti-metastatic activity in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) [1]. By interacting with acylglycerol kinase (AGK) and glutathione transport regulator SLC25A11 via its N-terminus, it suppresses ccRCC growth and metastatic lung colonization, inhibits AGK-mediated AKT phosphorylation, and maintains mitochondrial glutathione import and respiratory efficiency [1].
The knockdown and overexpression experiments suggest that both LINC00493/SMIM26 transcript and protein affect cell viability, but in an opposite manner [2].
