Overview of Gene Research
Kdm2b, also known as lysine-specific demethylase 2b, is an epigenetic regulator that demethylates H3K4me3 and H3K36me2 [1]. It is involved in multiple biological processes, including development, and is associated with pathways like the Wnt signaling pathway [2]. Genetic models, especially mouse models, have been crucial for studying its functions.
In mouse models, removing the chromatin-association capability of KDM2B in the progenitors of the developing dorsal telencephalon (Kdm2b∆CxxC) led to a smaller hippocampus with disorganized cellular components and structure, along with prominent defects in spatial memory, motor learning, and fear conditioning. This was due to the de-repression of Wnt signaling genes in the developing hippocampi [2]. In addition, KDM2B-deficient mice were more resistant to endotoxin shock and colitis, with decreased IL-6 production in sera, as KDM2B is required in macrophages and dendritic cells for the induction of IL-6 [1].
In conclusion, Kdm2b plays essential roles in development, immune-related inflammatory responses, and the regulation of hippocampal morphogenesis. Mouse models, especially those with Kdm2b loss-of-function, have significantly contributed to understanding its role in neurodevelopmental disorders and inflammatory diseases.
