Overview of Gene Research
Nit2, also known as nitrilase family member 2, has diverse functions. In humans, it's involved in chemoresistance in gastric cancer [1]. In organisms like Neurospora crassa and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, it serves as a key transcription factor regulating genes related to nitrogen metabolism [3,5].
In gastric cancer, depletion or low expression of Nit2 led to 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) resistance. Mechanistically, Nit2 interacts with bromodomain-containing protein 1 (BRD1) to inhibit histone acetylation and oxidative phosphorylation gene expression [1]. In tongue squamous cell carcinoma, its overexpression predicts poor prognosis [2]. In colon cancer cell lines, downregulation of Nit2 inhibits cell proliferation and induces cell cycle arrest through caspase-3 and PARP pathways [4].
In conclusion, Nit2 plays crucial roles in multiple biological processes and disease conditions. Its function in chemoresistance in gastric cancer, and its prognostic value in tongue squamous cell carcinoma, along with its impact on colon cancer cell behavior, highlight its significance in cancer research. Understanding Nit2 can potentially offer new therapeutic strategies for these cancers.
