Overview of Gene Research
Rbms2, also known as RNA binding motif single stranded interacting protein 2, is an RNA binding protein. It belongs to the RBM family with conserved RNA binding motifs RNP1 and RNP2, playing roles in regulating the metabolism of target RNAs. It has been associated with various biological processes, and its abnormal expression is linked to the development of multiple cancers [2].
In breast cancer, Rbms2 acts as a tumor suppressor. Overexpression of Rbms2 in breast cancer cells enhances sensitivity to doxorubicin, promoting apoptosis in the presence of this drug. This effect is reversed by the inhibition of BMF, as Rbms2 positively regulates BMF expression. Also, Rbms2 inhibits breast cancer cell proliferation by stabilizing P21 mRNA in a post-transcriptional way [1,2].
In kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (ccRCC), RBMS2 expression is negatively associated with adverse clinico-pathological features. Overexpression of Rbms2 curtails ccRCC cell proliferation and migration, and it is also linked to immune infiltration within the ccRCC tumor microenvironment [3].
In conclusion, Rbms2 functions as a tumor suppressor in breast cancer and ccRCC, regulating processes like chemosensitivity, cell proliferation, and migration. Studies in these cancer models help to understand its role in tumor development, potentially providing new therapeutic targets for drug-resistant cancers.
