Overview of Gene Research
GHRL, also known as the ghrelin prepropeptide gene, encodes the protein ghrelin which regulates appetite and energy balance in the human body [2]. Ghrelin is involved in multiple physiological processes and is associated with pathways related to metabolism, immune regulation, and potentially carcinogenesis [2]. Genetic models are valuable for studying GHRL's role in health and disease.
A meta-analysis involving 8,194 participants found that the GHRL gene Leu72Met polymorphism was significantly correlated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), especially in the Chinese population [1]. In the Ukrainian population, the T allele of the GHRL (rs696217) polymorphism indicated an increased risk of obesity development [3]. Also, GHRL expression was lower in gastric cancer samples compared to normal samples, and it was correlated with progression of precancerous lesions in gastric cancer [2]. However, a case-control study showed no significant association of GHRL polymorphisms with prostate cancer [4].
In conclusion, GHRL plays a crucial role in metabolism-related processes and disease development, such as in T2DM, obesity, and gastric cancer. The study of GHRL gene polymorphisms in different populations and its expression in various diseases through genetic models helps in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying these conditions, providing insights for potential diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
