Overview of Gene Research
Sema6b, a member of the semaphorin axon-guidance family, is involved in multiple biological processes. It plays important roles in axon guidance, neuronal development such as spine formation and maturation, and may be associated with immune-related pathways and inflammation [2].
In the context of hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF), Sema6b has been found to be a potential diagnostic biomarker. Knockout of Sema6b in mice rescued liver failure by improving liver functions, reducing inflammatory responses, and decreasing hepatocyte apoptosis. Overexpression of Sema6b in macrophages activated systemic inflammatory responses, while in hepatocytes it inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis [1].
In conclusion, Sema6b is crucial for neuronal development and axon guidance. In disease, especially HBV-ACLF, Sema6b plays a role in promoting liver failure through macrophage-mediated inflammation and hepatocyte apoptosis. The use of Sema6b knockout mouse models has been instrumental in revealing its role in liver-related disease conditions, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target for HBV-ACLF.
