Detailed Document
Overview of Gene Research
Cblif, related to the transport of vitamin B12 (cobalamin, Cbl), is involved in the complex process of Cbl assimilation in the organism [2]. During Cbl absorption, Cbl binds to glycoproteins like Hc and intrinsic factor (IF), and Cblif might play a role in this pathway, which is crucial for normal physiological functions as vitamin B12 is essential for cell metabolism, DNA synthesis, and nerve function [2].
In a study assessing the association between polymorphisms within genes involved in vitamin B12 transport and nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) in Chile, variant genotypes for Cblif were obtained from a single nucleotide polymorphisms array among 247 cases and 453 controls [1]. However, after multiple comparison corrections, only a polymorphism in CUBN remained associated with NSCL/P, and no direct significant associations of Cblif with NSCL/P were reported in this study [1].
In conclusion, Cblif is likely important in the vitamin B12 transport pathway, which is essential for multiple physiological processes. Although the Chilean study did not show a direct association of Cblif polymorphisms with NSCL/P, further research may clarify its role in this and other disease conditions related to vitamin B12 metabolism.
