Overview of Gene Research
Smim26 is a microprotein encoded by the long non-coding RNA LINC00493. It is localized in mitochondria and plays an anti-metastatic role in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). It functions through interacting with acylglycerol kinase (AGK) and glutathione transport regulator SLC25A11 via its N-terminus, which affects mitochondrial localization of AGK and AKT phosphorylation, as well as mitochondrial glutathione import and respiratory efficiency [1].
Research shows that LINC00493 is recognized by RNA-binding protein PABPC4 and transferred to ribosomes for translation of SMIM26. Knockdown and overexpression experiments suggest that both LINC00493/SMIM26 transcript and protein affect cell viability, but in opposite ways [2].
In conclusion, Smim26 is a microprotein with an anti-metastatic function in ccRCC. Studies on its gene and protein function help understand the biological processes related to cancer metastasis and cell viability, providing insights into potential therapeutic strategies for ccRCC.
