Overview of Gene Research
Tmem87a, also known as Elkin1 and GolpHCat, is a eukaryotic transmembrane protein. It has proposed roles in protein transport to and from the Golgi, mechanoelectrical transduction pathways, and developmental signaling. Disruptions in Tmem87a have been linked to cancers and developmental disorders [1,2]. Genetic models, such as knockout mice, are valuable for studying its functions.

In melanoma cells, deletion of Tmem87a (Elkin1) leads to defective mechanoelectrical transduction, decreased motility, and altered cell adhesion properties, suggesting it supports a PIEZO1-independent mechanoelectrical transduction pathway [2]. In GolpHCat-knockout mice, there are fragmented Golgi morphology, altered protein glycosylation, and impaired spatial memory, indicating its role in Golgi-pH maintenance and hippocampus-dependent memory [3]. Touch-insensitive Elkin1 -/- mice show a loss of mechanically activated currents in sensory neurons, highlighting its role in touch sensation [4].

In conclusion, Tmem87a is involved in multiple biological processes including mechanoelectrical transduction, Golgi-related functions, and touch sensation. Studies using gene knockout mouse models have revealed its importance in diseases such as melanoma and conditions related to cognitive impairment. Understanding Tmem87a can potentially provide insights into the mechanisms of these diseases and offer new therapeutic targets.
